Kramer, I understand from his own words, started doing the serve and volley out of a need to merely match what was already being done to him in order to survive against Riggs’ brilliant improvisation of his game tailer made to defeat Kramer in their pro tour together (also confirmed in Riggs own written accounts). Vines or Segura himself wrote that whenever Kramer his a volley, it was a put away – that is how strong, well placed and deep it was. I got the distinct impresion from these words that the standard then must have been much higher than it is now, as I seem to see a lot of stuff at the net that doesn not match the descriptions of players like Kramer and Sedgeman would suggest. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find good footage of these older players with which a comparison can be made. I only have the words of players like Kramer, Vines, Riggs and Segura to give me an idea of what volleying must have been like back then.

Nice of you to show the evolution of the volley.

Jack Kramer and Joe Hunt lost the Davis Cup to the Aussies before the War. Joe Hunt had shown his strong serve & volley abilities in defeating Jack Kramer in the finals of the US Open (6-0 in the 5th). Jack was already known to be a good volley, but they lost to the Aussies.

The next year Jack & Tom Brown were to play the Aussies in the Finals of the Davis Cup, but Jack wanted to use a new volley – “the slash volley.” He told Tom to “slash” every volley.
The Aussies did not get what going on with the “new” volley. They were “psyched out” and lost to the American youngsters. At the time the Aussies were the world’s championship doubles team in the Slams.
Thank God for advancing the evolution of the volley. Take Care, Jer

I would only suggest that the volley is actually getting slightly more prominent as the top players do come in when, as you suggest, they get their opponent in such a defensive situation that they are unable to hit with topspin.
It’s also my belief that when great athletes, who are even taller and quicker than today’s players, get into the game you will see more net play, including some serve and volley. I’m thinking of people of the level of a Michael Jordan or Magic Johnson.

The volley is a bit of a lost stroke due to the slowing down of the courts and the topspin generated by bigger, stronger, players with larger, more powerful racquets that can spin the ball more easily.

Aggressive baseliners dominate today. The volley is used sparingly to finish the point, where there is open court and the opponent is too stretched to topsin the ball. There is not a perception that the volley is a necessity for the aggressive baseliner, right or wrong.

The balance of the point has shifted. It used to be that the more volleys a player hit during the course of a point, the greater the odds of winning the point. The opposite is true today.

What will change this? It may change, but it would take an exceptionally powerful player with a HUGE
