Jack Kramer and Joe Hunt lost the Davis Cup to the Aussies before the War. Joe Hunt had shown his strong serve & volley abilities in defeating Jack Kramer in the finals of the US Open (6-0 in the 5th). Jack was already known to be a good volley, but they lost to the Aussies.
The next year Jack & Tom Brown were to play the Aussies in the Finals of the Davis Cup, but Jack wanted to use a new volley – “the slash volley.” He told Tom to “slash” every volley.
The Aussies did not get what going on with the “new” volley. They were “psyched out” and lost to the American youngsters. At the time the Aussies were the world’s championship doubles team in the Slams.

Aggressive baseliners dominate today. The volley is used sparingly to finish the point, where there is open court and the opponent is too stretched to topsin the ball. There is not a perception that the volley is a necessity for the aggressive baseliner, right or wrong.
The balance of the point has shifted. It used to be that the more volleys a player hit during the course of a point, the greater the odds of winning the point. The opposite is true today.
What will change this? It may change, but it would take an exceptionally powerful player with a HUGE
